911 is now available with VOIP phones, although it may go to a different dispatch center than your landline phone.

While it's true that if you lose power, your VOIP phone will probably
go down, this is equally true of ISDN phones if anyone actually has
one of those. The way to solve that problem would be to put your VOIP
phone adapter, router, and DSL modem or cable modem on a UPS. (That's
essentially what AT&T/Roadrunner/Comcast do for the digital phone
service they provide--they put it on a UPS, even if they call it
something else.)

All that said, I like having a regular phone line as well, for backup
purposes if nothing else. But my regular landline phone has no
features. I have to have it because we use DSL, anyway, but the only
things it has are touch tone dialing and unlimited local calling (no
long distnace, even).
