In a number of modern HF and VHF radios, as well as in ancient mobile
VHF radios, all of the radio's controls memory functions, etc. are
mounted in a separate unit. This allows for a small device at the
operating position with the actual radio to be placed in another
location like under a desk, or in the trunk of a car.
You will see the same setup for good car sterio systems, but they
call it a "face plate".
