Well, I think it more depends on how well they keep the lines maintained. 
Yes, you will be near some high voltage lines, probably 69 kilovolts or 
maybe more, depending on your system.  Here in Lansing, I am about a mile 
from a 138 kilovolt substation.  I do have a slightly higher noise level, 
but I can't honestly state that it is from the high power lines which are a 
block away.

It wouldn't surprise me, though, as I have heard them arcing during drizzly 
weather.  If you walk under them, it almost sounds like bacon frying.  I'm 
sure that has to create some kind of noise.
