Many of those registry fix programs do more damage than good.

I suspect a couple of those programs might have been enabled in your 
msconfig file.  You can always go to msconfig through the run command, look 
at the startup and services tabs and disable anything you don't want 
running.

But, the problem, as Lew mentioned, can be deeper than that in the registry. 
If you don't have a windows XP CD, you can always get one off of Ebay for 
around $50 or $60.  Microsoft requires that the Windows XP CD be shipped 
with a hardware component, so you'll probably get a little connecting cable 
with it, but it will be a basic copy of Windows XP if you need it.  It is 
always a good idea to have a copy in case of crashes, etc.
