well, the conferences have like 10 links and repeaters going through them,
and ham gear is more used to you talk a minute or 2, then listen for a bit,
but if you get in a conference, you might get 4 or 5 people talking, all
going through your radio so it's like10 times the use it gets as just a
normal single user radio. The commercial equipment can handle it but regular
ham 2 meter radios apparently can't do it. Most people I know running a link
like mine connected to conferences a lot and stuff use commercial equipment.
A couple others I know, 1 in particular, burns up a radio about once a year,
the other does a little better but he has a fan blowing on his radio with
the covers off the radio. I know my radio gets pretty hot but not enough to
concern me yet and I have a fan coming this week so I might be good but I'm
going to get a Motorola maxtrac late winter I'm hoping and then I won't have
any problem.
