Colin,

You're right, Kenwood doesn't use a stereo amplifier in the 480, or 
any other radio for that matter.  However, they do use 3-conductor 
jacks so you can plug in a set of stereo headphones and get sound in 
both ears.  I think that's a good idea, since stereo headsets are 
quite common these days and most people have them.
