One of our members called today and suggested I watch Geraldo at Large this
afternoon. (It's on Fox in Milwaukee.) She had seen the same program
yesterday and said it had a piece on celiac about a little girl who's family has
brought suit against McDonald's for the undisclosed wheat in their french fries.

While many may argue that suing isn't the answer, this is no ordinary case of
celiac...The little girls symptoms presented with seizures when she was a
toddler. While they eventually were able to control the seizures with meds, she
was autistic when she was 3. Parents put child on g.f./c.f. and had her tested
for celiac, which was positive. They had good results on g.f./c.f. diet for a
time but then new symtpoms developed and her condition relapsed. More testing
confirmed exposure to gluten and about that time McDonald's noted that oil
used to cook fries contained flavoring derived from wheat. After elimating the
fries, the child, now 6, is thriving.

McDonald's policy deprived the parent of information they needed to make
informed choices regarding their child's health and she suffered greatly as a
result. McDonald's doesn't think the case has merit but Geraldo noted it has also
eliminated the french fries & hash browns from their g.f. menu.

It's in the archives at http://www.geraldoatlarge.com/video-archive.php
October 26, entitled Fast Food Autism.
