I have an allergy to milk proteins. I get a stronger reaction to cow's milk
than goat's milk. I thought I'd try going totally dairy free by giving up
my beloved kefir & yogurt a few months ago to see if I would have less
overall allergy symptoms & achiness. I used to consume 1 or 2 cups of kefir
or yogurt every day.
Anyway, going dairy free was a disaster. Initially I did seem to have less
overall achiness, but I soon developed a nasty case of candida overgrowth
throughout my entire GI track (mouth to anus) having more allergic reactions
(overall leaky gut reaction to just about anything I ate), suffering with
more GI & "female" complaints than usual, and the sugar cravings were out of
control. (It's true what "they" say about the Yeast the Beast!) After
working with the "dose" of kefir/yogurt, I believe I've nailed my minimal
daily dose of kefir or yogurt to keep allergies and candida under control.
Through my experiences with candida, kefir, yogurt & other probiotic foods &
preparations I've come to several conclusions that work for ME:
1. I need a daily minimum of 3 oz. unsweetened kefir or yogurt to keep
candida overgrowth under control & suppress allergies.*
2. I need to vigilantly avoid sugars, refined carbohydrates & GF baked
goods.*
3. My need for a daily dose of live cultured foods is greater than my need
to avoid dairy.
4. Home made kefir & store bought goat milk yogurt are convenient, effective
& practical solutions for ME. Fermented veggies, non dairy kefirs, etc. are
too much work to be practical. Commercially prepared probiotic*
tablets/capsules are not as effective as the real thing & way too expensive
for me to use long term.
[I don't plan on posting a summary about this.]

*In case any of you are new to this idea, candida albicans is a common
opportunistic pathogenic yeast present the GI track of all people. (Not all
yeasts are pathogenic & not all GI pathogens are yeast.) Candida albican
overgrowth is encouraged by damaged immune systems (antibiotic use, disease,
IgA deficiency, etc.) and refined carbohydrate consumption. A candida
infection in the GI track causes inflammation, indigestion, excess gas,
leaky gut and the development of allergies. Consumption of beneficial
bacteria & beneficial yeasts (probiotics) found in foods such as yogurt,
kefir, kimche, etc. and avoidance of refined carbohydrates helps suppress
the overgrowh of candida albicans & other pathogenic micro-organisms, thus
supressing the development of allergies.
