OPPT NEWSBREAK Tuesday, 6 May 1997
Today's "Toxic News for the Net" brought to you by the OPPT
          Library
                       http://www.epa.gov/opptintr/oppt_nb.txt

"American Home Products Sued Concerning Diet Drug." Wall Street
          Journal, 6 May 97, B10.
Two drug makers have been sued by the family of a
30-year-old woman who died after taking the "popular
phen-fen diet drug combination" for 10 days. The suit names
divisions of American Home Products Corp., maker of
fenfluramine, and Medeva PLC, which sells phentermine. The
woman died of primary pulmonary hypertension. An
international scientific study found the risk of contracting
the lung disorder greatly increased after 3 months on the
diet drug combination, but had no conclusions on short-term
               effects.
