Dear Men, Women, and Children of AWA and AAM,

I'd like to announce an upcoming event that is free and open to the
public. The Astronomy Department at the UW is holding an open house
for the UW Space Place, an education center that is open to the
public and specializes in astronomy and space science. "By providing
hands-on activities, lively presentations, and informative lectures
by UW faculty and staff, the UW Space Place shows that science can be
fun for everyone!"

You may be asking what astronomy has to do with Africa. Well, some
things tie us all together. Music is a universal language, whether
it's a universal call to action or a universal lullaby. In a similar
way, the sky is a universal blanket that covers and keeps us all. We
all look up to the sky and wonder why.

There is another connection between Wisconsin, the skies, and Mama
Afrika. The UW is part of an international partnership in the
building of the Southern African Large Telescope. For more
information about this partnership, see
http://www.astro.wisc.edu/salt/.

Also, here is a great link about African starlore that shows a
Southern African perspective on the constellations visible from "the
Southern half of the globe":
http://www.saao.ac.za/starlore/legends.html. To lure you to this
sight, here is a quote about starlore in Malawi: "In Malawi the
morning star is Chechichani, a poor housekeeper who allows her
husband the moon to go hungry and starve; Puikani, the evening star,
is a fine wife who feeds the moon thus bringing him back to life."

Here is more detailed information about this weekend's Grand Opening

to get your children excited about our shared resource, the sky.
