Article is here

Do read the first comment at the end of the article, which I
think wisely suggests that the gene that was studied may have had
more to do with pleasure than digestive evolutionary advances.
(chimps don't need this effect so much?)

A lot of diversity in life forms does not necessarily have a
deliberate keystone effect in the lifeform's evolution, but are
variations of style. Maybe appreciation of sweetness and starches
is about the same level of evolutionary advantage as having a
hitchhiker's thumb, hanging earlobes, and wavy hair. Not
necessarily the pathway to the development of intelligence.

The Scientist sometimes puts some articles on pay-per-view very
quickly, so I don't know how long there will be free access to
this one. But as a general rule, their articles can still be
found in cache, even if the direct link wants you to pay.
