Although ex-policeman, Tertius Coetzee, was granted amnesty at the Truth
and Reconciliation Hearings for his role in the killing of political
activists during the apartheid years, he still feels haunted by his role
in the killing of Daniel Grootboom, a twenty-year old university student.
Coetzee travels to Paternoster, a small fishing village on the Atlantic
coast of South Africa, to ask for forgiveness from Daniel’s family. His
arrival in the small town unleashes pent-up emotions for the family,
leading to an intense exploration of grief, forgiveness and revenge.

Forgiveness was approved this year by the Department of Education in South
Africa for study in Grades 11 and 12, the first film to ever be placed on
the syllabus.
