Hi sherry,
On many laptops there is a special key which performs this
function when held down like a control key.
Or sometimes it toggles like numlock

If neither of you can see the keyboard lables, look for a key,
probably in a bottom left corner? which does not fit the normal
keyboard layout.

I am puzzled that this function, even if it is a toggle, would
"stick" beyond bootup, but at least you know this is a common
function often had on laptops.

There might be a special bios setting for this function in an
advanced bios screen somewhere or in machine specific utilities
if any.

Good luck
Tom Fowle
