well, all this talk about cholesterol made me curious, so I climbed up to
the top of my bookshelf and got my freshman biology book down. Here is what
I found:
Cholesterol is a sterol, hence choleSTEROL, animals use it to synthesize
vitamin D and steroid hormones, it is a component of some cell membranes of
animals. It belongs to the group called LIPIDS, of which triglyceride or
FAT and phospholipids are also members. Fat is made up of one glycerol and
3 fatty acid molecules - triglyceride. Fatty acids without double bonds
between their carbons form saturated fatty acids - they have the maximum of
hydrogen atoms attached to the carbon atoms - hence hydrogenated fats,
saturated fats. Unsaturated fatty acids contain one or very few double
bonds - hence monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat. I could go on, but
enough is enough.
I am glad you all coaxed me into taking this brief refresher, in my mind at
least things are a little clearer now. Can't help you though with how much
is enough, good, or bad. Maybe this should have been a different thread.
