>The actual procedure is painless but the dr. will give your daughter to
sleep through . I was bleeding a lot but the procedure did not cause more
bleeding.

Someone tried a colon cleanse for three days to avoid the prep but ti did
not work because of a blockage.

Another tried another alternative but said if there is anything left in the
intestine they will stop the scope and

you ll have to go thru the whole procedure again so do it right the first
time.

Tthe homeopathic remedy veratrum alb 30c..2 pills under the tongue was
recommended as well as the amino acid L-glutamine which I wanted to use but
had previously lost the message so I was grateful to get this again

One caution about which prep you drink as one was reported in the NY Times
to cause kidney damage and to use the one

where you have to drink a gallon of the stuff..it is safer but tastes bad.

One suggestion was to take soluble fiber if possible now and then start the
liquid diet sooner so there is less need to clean out. This person said
GoLytely is not any gentler.

Someone I know took VISACOL this. It was gentle but you have to take a lot
of pills every 15 minutes. She said she would not do it any other way. I
had to take the citrate of magnesia before surgery and I got so dehydrated,
I thought I'd faint. I had terrible cramps and diarrhea from it. Didn't
think I'd make it to the OR.

One person said they never had to do the stimulant laxatives for (6)
colonoscopies; they make me sick. I do a day of clear liquids (and they are
fussy about what exactly may be consumed) , plus GoLightly or phos-soda, or
Mag Citrate. I think my pref is the phos-soda. Mag cit works in a similar
way, osmotic gradient.

The basic thing is, there has to be a complete washout of the bottom 5 feet
of colon before ya get scoped. My DD (age 18) did the prep 18 mos. ago at a
time when she had pain, bleeding, and diarrhea. She also was able to opt
out of stim laxative portion, and other than finding being in the bathroom
for hours "on end", Rectal irritation is common. Invest in a jar of
vaseline & coat the rectal area liberally & frequently during the prep. The
scoping itself was duck soup except for low-low blood pressure from the
anesthesia. Scoped at 8 am, home by 11, eating a light supper by 5 pm. She
kinda slept away for a few hours in between. Next day, pretty much back to
normal.

As far as a colonoscopy I had one and don't know of any easier "prep". They
all involve the big D. What I did was eat very lightly for 2 days before the
liquid day so that I would not have so much in my system to void.

I had bloody diahrrea before going gf, but had already gone gf before having
my first colonoscopy a short time later (~1 mo). To me, the

clean-out prep was no big deal as I was so used to having diarrhea anyway!
My prep was Go-Lightly.

I over react to those medications, too. The last time I took them I refused
the tablets, took the Citrate of Magnesia, and still camped in the bathroom
all night. I might suggest, instead, several days of low residue diet, a
couple of days of liquid diet, and then the Fleet's enema the morning of the
test. This is plenty.

Doctors who order these prep meds have no idea how much suffering goes into
taking them. I have since refused to take any more than an enema the
morning before. I refuse to take a colonoscopy altogether. If they cannot
find it with some kind of imaging, then that's too bad.

Someone suggested the test where you swallow the capsule that travels thru
your system and that we should consider imaging studies first.

There was one suggestion to ask for just a sigmoid scope.

Thank you to everyone for your sympathy and kind wishes

Paula
