A few weeks ago I asked about GF-friendly restaurants and stores in
San Luis Obispo, CA and Santa Cruz, CA. The summary follows.
-------------------------------------
San Luis Obispo, CA:
1) Oasis [San Luis Obispo, Higuera - between Broad and Nipomo] - must
let them know of intolerance, and ask that Pita not be included.
2) McKlintocks [Same place across the street] - stick to steak, no
sauce, oil&vinager on salad, no beans. Potato. For breakfast, stick
to eggs & bacon, pan fries.
3) Tiki Hut - Ask for Stew's special [beef & rice bowl, lots of
vegetables, no Teriaki sauce], or ask for the red potato bowl.
Location is California and Taft in San Luis Obispo [right off the 101
South Bound Offramp]
4) Big Sky - Menu varies, but generally includes several celiac
friendly dishes for breakfast and dinners. Lunch menu includes fewer
items, but one can usually find something. The wait staff and the
owner are familiar with the needs of celiacs. [Location is San Luis
Obispo, on Broad between Marsh and Higuera.]
5) Panchos - Salsa is good. Machaca, Beef Taco's, beans and rice all
seem fine as long as one specifies soft corn tortillas. Chicken
dishes may use a marinade that is not gluten free. Wide variety of
additions available, and the flan and hot cocao are excellent.
6) Chili Peppers - Avoid the sour cream, stick to items with soft corn
tortillas and beef. Wide variety of additions available. Beans and
rice seem safe, and are very good.
7) Mo's -get BBQ beef with no bun. Their homemade potato chips are awesome too.
8) Sushi at Surugi, bring your own soy sauce.
9) the best Thai food is Thai Classic and they claim to use mostly
fish sauce in their cooking, not soy sauce. Royal Thai is also good.
10) Farmer's Market works well too. Lots of meat. I went inside the
store at Old Country Deli and they sliced me off some cooked tri-tip.
That way I did not have to deal with a roll that I can't eat.
11) Mondeo - They have plain chicken skewers and steamed rice for the
very careful celiac diet. Some dishes are made with rice stick noodles
and steamed rice. Make sure they do not add soy sauce to the items.
The Mu-Shu chicken on a bowl seems safe. Always double check all
ingredients are safe.
12) Tahoe Joe's would prepare hamburgers, steaks, salads, etc and make
sure they do not contain gluten. Ask for the manager as the waiters
may or may not be familiar with the diet.
13) Embassy Suites Hotel has a very accommodating chef that would work
with your dietary needs and make sure you don't get gluten during your
meal.
14) New Frontiers on Foothill (close to Cal Poly) that sells GF
products, including Kinnikinnick breads.
----------------------------
Santa Cruz, CA:
We ate at these two restaurants and had no problems after discussing
our needs with the waiters and modifying our selections:
1) Vasili's Greek Restaurant, 1501 Mission St # A, (831) 458-9808
2) Miramar Fish Grotto, 45 Municipal Wharf, (831) 423-4441
Our impression was that we could have safely eaten at most seafood
restaurants on the Wharf and that people were aware of food allergies
and treated them seriously.
-----------------------------
www.bayareaceliacs.org is a web site that will cover the Bay Area
including Santa Cruz. A few chain restaurants (Chick-fil-a) have
branches in San Luis Obispo CA.
-----------------------------
Thanks for everyone's help!
