Hello Listmates,
Does anyone have suggestions for adrenal insufficiency/Addison's disease along with celiac disease? I have been very strictly gluten free for two years but still tired, have malabsorption of fats and some proteins, intracellular mineral levels off with potassium high/sodium low and all of the others low but not as far off as potassium and sodium, still no beneficial bacteria in the gut even with 40 billion of a really good probiotic daily, intolerant to heat and cold, muscle spasms. Five weeks ago started weekly infusions of amino acids that are very low and vitamins which are low. The infusions have made quite a difference. Due to the above the doc decided to do 24 hour urine for adrenal hormones- every value was very low. The endocrinologist has ordered 17 more labs to be done today including adrenal hormones, pituitary hormones, thyroid hormones and tests I have never heard of before. She is calling the diagnosis adrenal insufficiency(in addition to celiac) based on the
24 hour urine but suspects the results will show Addison's disease with possible low thyroid and pituitary involvement. She stated that Addison's often goes along with celiac and the pituitary and thyroid can be involved. She called my medical history facinating and asked dozens of questions when I saw her yesterday. One interesting thing she did tell me is that malabsorption, mineral imbalances, low vitamins, weight loss and fungal infections, multiple allergies are also symtoms of adrenal insufficiency/Addison's disease along with the constant thirst and drinking large amounts of water which I have been doing for about 5 years. I had even started drinking a glass of water with a half teaspoon of salt added once or twice a day. She said drinking salt water used to be the treatment for Addison'disease before Cortisone drugs came along. I had been thinking the continued malabsorption and muscle spasms were still part of celiac but I guess there are quite a few crossover symp
toms if adrenal glands are very weak and not functioning properly. Also she told me that Addison's Disease can be caused by autoimmunity- there are quite a few other known causes as well. Another cause can be systemic yeast infection-I had yeast in the gut, toenails a few years ago around the time that my celiac problems became quite serious with a 30 pound weight loss in two months.
Also if anyone has suggestions for other websites or books or organizations that would give me information, I would really appreciate it.
I do have a book called Adrenal Fatigue by James L. Wilson published by Smart Productions in 2001.
Thank you for all your help. I will try to get a summary out a little quicker although there is another summary from a while ago that I am still working on. I wait for better energy days to come along to get some things done.
I hope adding a few details of the new diagnosis may help someone else who is struggling with similar issues.
Thank you so much!
