question:-

if the mouse is not connected during reinstal/fresh instal of an o/s and, the installation is completed succesfully and, the system shut down ONLY WITH KEYBOARD INPUT and is rebooted with the ps/2 mouse connected WHY DOES NOT THE O/S DETECT THE P/S2 MOUSE AND INSTALL THE CORRECT DRIVERS BUT JUST FREEZE AT THE LOGIN SCREEN??

to be brief... after several days of struggling (including DOS mouse drivers) i finally got the compaq presario 5000 going BUT with a ps/2 to USB converter to which the keyboard and mouse was connected.

instead of being satisfied with this and, in my desire to understand why the mouse is not functioning in it's native port i poked around (cutting/pasting mouse drivers/ mouse .inf/editing autoexe.bat/config.sys etc etc). i also did a regisry edit but this was because the compaq had no "folder options" menu in either "tools or view" in win 98se and i wanted to see the hidden system files to cut/paste. so i navigated to the registry key and set the value to "0"instead of "1". this opened up folder options.

because of all this the USB keyboard/mouse became dysfunctional!!!

went and bought a rare chinese made serial port mouse and powered up.

all ok BUT when i attached the p/s2 mouse to it's native port (after shut down)and rebooted it froze and KEYBOARD also became dysfunctional!!!

to cut short...in disgust...i increased the RAM (again a rare comodity SDRAM)

fdiskd/formatted and installed WINXP PRO.

NOTE.. i could do this with only the keyboard attached to it's native port because if p/s2 mouse attached keyboard becomes dysfunctional.

successful install/ shut down/attach p/s2 mouse..... freeze...no keyboard /mouse functionality.

so as of the moment the system is fine with winxp pro/ keyboard in it's port,
serial port mouse

device manager(winxp) shows "microsoft serial port mouse"

in win98se though the serial port mouse was functional device manager showed ps/2 with YELLOW EXCLAMATION...drivers loaded

(1)c\win\sys\vmouse.vxd,,(2) c\win\sys\msmouse.vxd,,,(3) c\win sys\mouse.drv

IRQ-12.

STATUS-- this device not present/not functioning/not all drivers loaded (error code 24)

i checked the p/s2 mouse drivers installed in another system with 98se and functioning normally with p/s2 port mouse attached and the only difference is in item (1)... it shows c\win\sys\VMM32\vmouse.vxd.

sorry for the long post and will greatly appreciate any input, including whether worthwhile pursuing the matter... if nothing.... then thanks for the patience in reading through

good luck--Venkat

PS.--could there be a short in the adjacent keyboard/p/s2mouse ports??

why does the keyboard become dysfunctional if mouse attached???
