Not so strange.

This does 2 things: 1. Lowers electrical resistance 2. May shrink 
mechanical parts enough to free up stiction.

As a last resort, if all else fails and it's at the throw-away stage as 
Dean mentioned, dropping the HD from about 6 inches onto a hard surface is 
also a remedy which has been known to occasionally work.
