Course to cover minimally invasive thyroid, parathyroid surgery

Dr. Paolo Miccoli, a pioneer of minimally invasive thyroid and parathyroid surgery techniques, is among the guest faculty for the Medical College of Georgia’s April 21-22 course on these new surgical approaches.
Dr. Miccoli, professor and chief of the Department of Surgery at the University of Pisa, Italy, will discuss “Minimally Invasive Thyroidectomy” at 9:40 a.m. Friday, April 21 and “Minimally Invasive Parathyroidectomy” at 9:40 a.m. April 22 during the “Minimally Invasive Surgical Management of Parathyroid Disorders” course at the Augusta Marriott Hotel and Suites.
Dr. Miccoli and Dr. David Terris, chair of the MCG Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and a pioneer in the United States of these minimally invasive approaches, will conduct a live Webcast on minimally invasive thyroid surgery at 4 p.m. Friday, April 21 from the MCG Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D., Library. The Webcast will include video of Dr. Terris performing the techniques in March at MCG Medical Center. slp3D, Inc., a West Hartford, Conn.-based company specializing in health care Webcasting, is coordinating the Webcast.
Other guest faculty include Dr. Phillip K. Pellitterri, professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Penn., discussing “Conventional Parathyroidectomy” at 9 a.m. April 22 and “Surgery for Secondary Hyperparathyroidism” at 10:30 a.m.
Dr. Ronald J. Weigel, professor and chair of the University of Iowa Department of Surgery, will discuss “Conventional Approaches to the Thyroid Compartment” at 9 a.m. April 21 and “Management of Well-Differentiated Thyroid Cancer” at 10:30 a.m.
“Management of Benign and Malignant Thyroid Disease” and “Parathyroid Disease” will be the focus of panel discussions.
A cadaver-dissection laboratory teaching new surgical techniques is part of the two-day course presented by the MCG Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the Division of Continuing Education.
