Thanks for all the responses.
I received 12 over 10 days:
Creon 3
Solary 1
KAL 1
Papaya 1
Lipanase 1
Jarrowzymes plus 1
Twin labs 1
Digest and Protease by Transformation 1
Biotics Beta Plus 1
One person suggested working closely with a
physician considering all alternative diagnoses prior
to starting any new medications.
Responses are cut and pasted below:
______________
Hi - I take Creon with every meal (I have to for
chronic pancreatitis), and as far as I can tell it
causes no problem at all. It's prescription.
______________
If they don't work it may not be the problem.
Pancreatic insufficiency needs to be tested for.
Consider SIBO (small bowel bacterial overgrowth)
instead (for which an empiral trial of antibiotics may
be as good a way as any of identifying), lactose
intolerance or other conditions (eg thyroid
disease). You really need to involve your doctor and
have more tests. It is important to rule out
refractory CD and cancer, especially if you are
over 40. If there is no improvement a repeat biopsy
would be needed. This is what would be advised here in
the UK.I attach the excellent new article from Green
and Cellier in the NEJM which,
amongst other things, identifies causes of
non-responsive CD*.
_______________
I have been taking Creon 20 capsules for 2 years
without a problem, that I can distinguish. It took a
while(almost a year) for the pancreatitis pain and
diarrhea to goaway, but I've been mostly free of those
symptoms for the
last 6 months.
_______________
I take after a meal solaray pancreatic enzyme 1300
_______________
I use the KAL brand and tolerate them well.
_______________
Try Papaya tablets from your health food store. Papaya
mimics the pancreatic acids, and it's found naturally
in papaya. The tablets are chewable and
should be GF
_______________
I use Lipanase by Douglas Labs and I have a ton of
food sensitivities. I take 3 tablets 15-30 minutes
before a meal.
_______________
I have used Jarrow-Zymes Plus for almost 5 yrs - a
recommendation from my physician daughter. Even though
I am in CA, I buy them from VitaCost
in Florida since they are the cheapest I have found,
no tax (out of state) and only 4.99 shipping
regardless of how many items I buy. I
usually get 6 at a time.
_______________
I had the same problem and could not take the
prescription so my doctor started me on Digest and
Protease by Transformation. You have to get
them from a doctor or pharmacy because they won't
sell them directly to you. In San Antonio, I have
seen them at Oakdell pharmacy but I get mine
directly from my doctor. They are gluten free and
casein free.
_______________
I began using Creon when first diagnosed with CD about
20 years ago. They helped me tremendously. Now I
take digestive enzymes by Pioneer which are made in a
gluten free facility and state gluten free on the
label. Check out www/pioneernutitionals.com.
_______________
Pancreatic enzymes are enteric coated so that they
will survive the stomach acid and get to your
digestive tract. If you're taking a non-enteric coated
enzyme, it is most likely not working or is what's
causing you problems.
Several on the list have tried Twin Labs pancreatic
enzymes (I hope they weren't confused with digestive
enzymes...)
_______________
My NP had me on Biotics Beta Plus which is an Ox Bile
base rather than pancreatin (pig based) and as I don't
have a gallbladder I also took Choacol. When I ran
out and decided to try the pancratin instead I had
problems from cold like symptons to getting joint pain
again. You might try the Ox Bile based products
instead. They are had to get in stores but I sure
find them to work much better for me.
