The "ping" command doesn't just tell you that the remote PC is up, it
verifies that suitable routing is in place to get packets from machine A to
machine B and back again. (The fact that any site works at all tends to
suggest that it's not a basic routing/address setting on the router.)
About the only new element you've introduced is a router feature called
NAT (Network Address Translation). There are a few kinds of things that
some sites *might* do that aren't compatible with NAT. (Small routers like
this have become common enough for most sites to shy away from approaches
that conflict with NAT.)
You may have to get to pcadvisor from another machine and ask them for
assistance.

How likely is it that there are *no* other wireless networks in your
neighborhood? I'm wondering if the wireless in the laptop actually works.

It occurred to me to wonder if the wireless network support built into the
laptop might be of the 802.11a variety, incompatible with the 802.11b/g
standard offered by the router. I am unable to find any information about
the wireless capabilities of this laptop model beyond "yes, it has wireless"
-- that's simply not sufficient. Is there any literature that came with it
giving more details?
