what i like about the 1802 is that it has a great deal of audio head room
for a VHF radio.
Most vhf/uhf rigs out there, and kenwood is the absolute worst, have very
low factory set tx audio.
The 1802 has a menu driven mike gain control which allows you to have the
mike anywhere from off to well into the over deviation stage...which of
course is a bad thing on FM...but at least you have the capability of
setting it to what ever volume you want.
Kenwood, especially in their upper end VHF/UHF radios, have, for some silly
reason, set the tx audio to 50 percent modulation which means you literally
have to bellow into the mike sometimes to be heard properly.
This is alright i suppose for a very noisy mobile environment, such as in an
uninsolated fighter jet...but not for the average user.
That, is actually, my one and only complaint about the kenwood vhf/uhf
radios.
