The summer after I graduated from College, I got a post card in the
mail that said "Return this if you're interested in hearing about Army
opportunities. I returned it, and got a call from the local recruiter
in a couple of weeks, who asked me o set up an appointment to go talk
to him. I rolled into the office n my chair, and he said "Uh, I think
there has been some mistake..." I said "Do I still get the free
T-Shirt?"

I'd been out of work and school for three months, and was getting
bored, so I asked if he knew of any civilian opportunities. He
mntiuoned several civil service type things to look into, but never
mentioned things like VISTA, or Peace Corps, or similar avenues.
These agencies already exist, and could be great avenues for public
service for those who are morally or philosophically opposed to
military service, and would do a lot of good for the US and the world

BTW, as of last night Kerry had apologized....
