Christmas is just one of many holidays that fall in late December.  The  
real origin of all of them is the winter solstice (or the summer solstice,  
if you live in the southern hemisphere). The celebration has been there  
long before Christmas came along.  I don't know if paleo man celebrated  
it, but neolithic man certainly did.
