I am among the uninitiated. This sounds very interesting. I'm just
curious. Would you need copyright permission to (if I understand it
correctly) make a copy in the alternative format? I know we are trying
to better understand the issue of video (or dvds) and adding various
kinds of closed captioned or description, etc. In those cases I believe
you need copyright permission to make a copy with in order to enhance
the material. Thank you for any info you might have!

Subject: You Can Create DAISY Books!
Yes, even YOU can create electronic books using the new DAISY format!
Just like there are authoring tools that enable people to create Web
pages
without knowing HTML, there are new authoring tools that enable you to
create books in the DAISY format without your knowing all the nuts and
bolts of DAISY. Obviously, in both cases, it sure helps if you
understand
some basic principles especially if you know something about the
importance of format and structure, but you need not be an expert in the
actual code of the document.
Karen McCall from Karlen Communications will present 2 EASI Webcasts
on DAISY creation. March 28 will be an overview and preview. May 7
will explain step-by-step how to use an authoring tool to create a DAISY
document. Karen gave EASI an absolutely brilliant series of online
presentations last fall on PDF and how to create accessible PDF
documents. These presentations were by far the most popular and best
attended of all the EASI Web conferences, and we know that people will
be more than pleased with the 2 presentations scheduled for this spring.
Both presentations will be at 2 PM eastern and run for about an hour
each.
You need to register to be sure you have a spot saved in the live, voice
chat, conference room. You can register at:

Oh! I may be assuming too much. Perhaps you don't know what a
DAISY book is!
DAISY is a new electronic book format that gives the user fantastic
abilities
to manipulate a text that they are reading. It permits skipping to
selected
pages, skipping ahead by header or sub header, paragraph and sentence.
Many believe it provides better ability for a reader to manipulate a
text than
anyone would have with a hard copy print book. The Library of Congress
program providing books for the blind, Recording for the Blind and
Dyslexic as well as the books that will soon be available for k-12
students
will use DAISY or a version of DAISY. Within 2-3 years, anyone involved
in using or obtaining books in alternate formats will be familiar with
it.
