Thank you to everyone who answered my question about this medication.

Within a day or two the bleeding stopped and the gas pain and diarrhea

started to improve. Unfortunately she ate some raw fruit and was back to

a lot of blood but after giving up the fruit has started to improve again.

I am supposed to discuss with the doctor today or tomorrow about doing a

colonoscopy. She is tolerating the pill well and is seeing some steady

improvement. Here are the responses. Paula in Pa.

============================================

Some one asked if Xifaxan is gluten free. I called the mfr. website

phone number and talked to a doctor who checked and called back.

He said yes it is gluten free.

======================================================

One person pointed out that celiacs develop bad gut flora and

suggested Kefir as a good broad spectrum probiotic to get

good flora.

We were just about to try kefir when she got so sick she ended

up in the ER.

======================================================

One family is traveling to Africa with a Crohn's and a celiac teen.

Their pediatric gastro gave them this antibiotic to carry with them in

case of intestinal problems and were not warned about any

conflicting foods.

==========================================================

Someone wrote saying that an E Coli study showed it can can dodge

antibiotics by invading "immune system cells in the bladder wall" and

wondered if other bugs do too. One study found 18% of

E Coli had become resistant to SMZ/TMP (that is
trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole).

This should be of interest to celiacs who have a tendency to get
infections.

======================================================

One person took this medication for a small intestine overgrowth,

and was filled with gas with a very bad odor, but after taking the
medication

for 4 weeks was much better. Some of her food intolerances went

away.

She said it is very important to have a good probiotic afterward and used

VSL#3 from the doctor for a month after the Xifaxan. Her doctor said

VSL#3 is the only probiotic that has been studied by the Gastro docs

and is used to treat ulcerative colitis. the website gives you dosages
for

your weight etc.

She took 3 packets of this but it caused too gas & had to cut down to 1 pack

a day for 10 days then increase to 2 a day for the balance of the month.

=========================================================

Someone cautioned about ingredients and vitamins and recommended

Twinlab Allergy MultiCaps for Allergic and Chemically Sensitive individuals

at VitaminShoppe. I need to look this up.

=========================================================

Someone suggested it could be Giardia and had been on two kinds of pills.

This is one of the things for which our dau. was cultured.

=========================================================

One person was given Xifaxan 800mg a day (our dau. is on 600) for what

turned out to be celiac disease. The only side effect was flatulence,
nothing

else unpleasant.
