You are right, these are very precious and important documents. I am not
sure what role the Mali government or Historians in the country or continent
are playing since I just picked up the story from the Reuters pages. However,
I am thinking that if South Africa has come forward to offer their assistance
on the matter, the significance of these papers has been realized and the
South Africans could not have gotten involved without the cooperation and
involvement of the Mali Government. I hope the Malians realize that great care
needs to be taken and the people who have these documents educated as to their
value and importance before the looters of other people's national treasures
descend on them and run off with them.

These are treasures!
This is so important and not just for UNESCO. What is Mr Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow
's role in all this?
What role is the Mali governemnet playing?
