Isn't that a bit of a stretch?  He "could have used" most anything,  
including grains.  The question isn't what he "could have" used, but what  
he actually did use.

As for salt, I suspect if it was available, it was used.  Wild animals  
have salt licks, why wouldn't wild man have done the same?
