Background: My husband is heavily muscled, normal weight, normal lipids
(if you believe lipid hypothesis) and exercises VIGOROUSLY every day. He
mostly does high intensity weigh training and body weight exercises and on
some days short bouts of high intensity aerobics such as sprints up hill or
bear crawls up hill -- that kind of thing. He cross-trains and mixes his
workouts up. Trainers at the gym always marvel at his fitness level --
he's 51 years old and he's in better athletic shape than most 30 year old
men. Anyway - he and I are increasingly troubled by his creeping high
blood pressure. We were first alerted to this when he got turned down for
blood donation. He went to his doc who told him to take a record for
several weeks -- multiple readings per day.
On average, he was normal more
than not -- however, the high readings are troubling. This morning for
instance he was 145 over 90 -- yet hear rate is always low -- around 53-55.
Both of his parents take blood pressure medicine so maybe this is genetic?
He is familiar with paleo because of how I eat -- but although he eats the
meats etc that I eat -- he also eats COPIOUS amounts of starch and sugars
on a regular basis. Example: if I have lamb and asparagus for dinner with
maybe a small serving of fruit for dessert -- he will have the same PLUS
lots of starch and sugar. Now he can obviously handle starches and sugars
well in terms of not gaining weight or having it affect his lipids (he has
low triglycerides, high HDL, low LDL -- total cholesteral
considered "normal") -- he has an active job in addition to working out
daily. But I am so worried about his blood pressure and feel that it may
help if he were to e
at more paleo style. Are there any normal weight
paleos out there who saw there blood pressure improve after cutting out or
greatly reducing grains for instance?? I am very worried about my
husband. He's at the gym now and doesn't blood pressure rise normally
during a workout? Could he stroke out during a workout??? And when he
comes back from the gym he'll eat a hideous bowl of sugared oatmeal and
fruit! If he has protein, it will be one of those whey shakes. I'm hoping
that some will share your experience on how paleo helped your blood
pressure. Bear in mind, he is normal weight - losing excess fat helps
lower blood pressure but he is not overweight or overfat -- so I'm
interested most in hearing from thin, athletic paleos who have seen cutting
grains/sugars help their pressure readings. Sorry to be so long winded --
I'm really frightened -- my mother had a stroke at a young age and I don't
