I can't argue with your plan to just go ahead and replace the drive.
However, if you have the time, you might try the write zeros to the drive
utility and then re-run the diagnostic on it. It's possible that the
problems are just at the file or configuration level and not the hardware
itself. If it is a hardware problem, it may not even be able to overwrite
the whole drive with zeros. Unfortunately, on a large USB drive, these
tasks can take many hours. Maybe run it overnight.

The drive did come with WD Diagnostic software and I ran it. It reported too
many bad sectors after running for about an hour so I guess I'll just be
safe and replace the drive.
