Start menu; run; enter; choose or ctrl-tab to the start-up tab; choose
the Selective Start-up radiobutton; uncheck the items you do not want to
start up automatically; ok; close any other work; and let the computer
restart; go past ythe selective start-up warning message when you
restart (you may want to check that box the next time), and let it
restart. Now if you want, check your system resources.

Hi Simon,
I just did this in Win XP, which is a bit different then 98; there may
be a
simpler way, but using win 98 I would go to the start menu, then Run,
then
type in msconfig
and hit OK. A screen will appear with various tabs. Go to the Startup
tab
to see what is in your startup tray and remove the check in front of
items you do not want to load when you start your PC. Folks like
RealNetworks, and ITunes and others often add a little program to run at
start up, and removing these made a big difference in the start up time
for
me.
Somewhere there is a list of programs found often in start up files and
a
note on whether they are necessary or can be safely removed. I can't
seem
to find this list just now, but will post if I find it.

Good luck,
Lisa

hello list,
does anyone know how to remove programs from the start-up group, so that
they do not start when windows does?
there are quite a few in my start-up group, that don't really need to be
running at start-up, and are just hogging computer resources, but I
can't
seem to figure out how to remove them.
I am using win98SE.

Simon
