As you are aware, the CPi has one 1.0 USB port that could be used for an
external hard drive. It has either 32 or 64 MB RAM standard and with two
slots, the RAM can be increased to a maximum of 256 MB with the latest
BIOS flash. The existing standard hard drive is 6 GB. It is a PII under
400 MHz. It will work with Windows 98 and maybe ME, but not later
versions. The CPi came standard with a CD drive. Is your's non operational?

My first opinion would be that it is not worth upgrading. Even if you
were able to buy a second CPi for $50+/- plus shipping, you would need
an external hard drive enclosure for a notebook drive at a cost of
$20+/- plus shipping. You would have put $80+/- more into what really
is an obsolete machine. I realize though that it can serve well for some
limited uses. On the plus side, you would end up with 6GB more hard
drive capacity, 32 or 64 MB more RAM, and a CD drive.

If your not tied to a notebook, which you apparently are not since you
need to have it plugged into AC power to use it, you might save your
money for a while and invest in a new desktop computer. If you keep an
eye on ads from Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples, and other retailers,
you can get a great deal on a good (not great) computer system for
under $300, after rebates, that will run circles around the CPi and
handle most new software. If you decide to go this route, plan on adding
more RAM to get to at least 512MB or buy a system with at least 512MB.

Complete working used one are listed on eBay for between $20 and $50. Thinking of getting one and installing both HD and all the memory into one laptop.
