Having struggled through the "XP won't shut down" syndrome on a Compaq I was given, here's what I found out. I tried all of the Compaq and Microsoft fixes with to avail. I had replaced a DVDROM in the original box with a Samsung CDROM. When I put the original DVDROM back in, the shutdown problem went away. With the CDROM installed, the machine ran just fine except for the shutdown problem and there were no conflicts reported in the Device Manager.
