Chris,

In order for a vertical to perform well on the lower frequencies, you
have to have a good system of radials. Since radials have to be 1/2
wave length, that means each one should be about 65 feet long, which
means you need lots of space. I used to have a Butternut 18AVQ, and
even though it had 80 meter traps, it didn't work at all well on that
band because I didn't have the space for the radials. In fact, it
worked best on 20 meters, probably because the radials I had were
approximately right for that band. I'd be interested to know if
other people have had any better luck on 80 meters with the verticals
that don't require radials.
