Hi PCBuilders,
I know that in the past, using RAID 5 without a dedicated controller
(which was not part of the motherboard) caused a heavy load on the cpu.
I wish to know if it is still true. I consider purchasing a new computer
based on Gigabyte GA-EP45C-DS3R motherboard, which uses the ICH10R south
bridge. CPU is likely to be core2quad Q9550.
OS is likely to still be Windows XP pro. memory is 2x2GB (and I'
m aware that only slightrly more than 3 out of the 4 GB of the RAM will be
in use.
I wish to consider using 4 hard drives (4 times WD 10EADS) as a RAID5 (3 +
1 parity) for better reliability and better performance.
Should I? Are there any disadvantages?
Thanks,
Uzi
