I have MBs with (and with-out) build in graphics.
(SO, I get to see those problems both ways...)

When you boot up, (with either), especially with
a brand new install, IF your graphics are NOT supported
with drivers build into the OS, (or they are damaged, set,
or selected wrong) you generally will default to the
"works just enough" VGA mode. This is 16 colors
and 640 x (etc...) or 800 x (etc) on newer OSs.

At that point, you have no choice, you need to ID the
video card (if any) OR the graphics chipset on the MB,
AND get and install the drivers for it.

How "I" do that is to look around the MB (or card),
or read the MB manual (if a chipset) for clues...

After I have the proper drivers for the video, and keep them
up to date, (if any become available), I seldom have any
more video problems...
