Although you don't give much info on your system (Tower brand, operating
system, etc.), The "echo chamber" part sounds like a built in mic feeding back.
I had this problem and cured it by going to Start/Control panel/Sounds and
under the sound tab click Advanced. Then either lower the mic volume slider or
click the mute box. Also try playing with the other volume levels to get a
better sound. This was done in windows xp. Does the problem occur with every
application (playing cds, games, online browsing, etc.)?
