One explanation I have heard concerning the Bible used in court, placing the
left hand on the bible, raising the right, and swearing to tell the truth
has to do with people in covenants. Covenants were cut, literally a cut and
the shedding of blood, in the palm of the hand or in the wrist area.
Therefore, in a dispute, one would place one hand on the Bible, swearing to
tell the truth so help me God, and the raising of his right hand, if he was
a covenant cut man, would display for everyone to see that he could not lie
because he was in covenant relationship. The Bible guaranteed to the
hearers that he would die before he would lie. Well, them days are long
gone.

Phil.
