My 84 yr old mother just had a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy to try to
determine the cause of her mild anemia. She has been on a gf diet for 6 years.
She is not officially diagnosed - just went on the diet after my diagnosis. I
had dh and she had horrible digestive problems. Her digestive problems
improved greatly on the gf diet but she still had occasional diarrhea. She also
can't eat many things like soy, citrus, spices, etc.
The doctor also took blood for celiac testing. Those tests came back
negative. He said her insides look like those of a celiac who is eating gluten.
He thinks that is why she is anemic. We are really checking her diet and
medicines again for hidden gluten. She does not eat out at all. He sent her a
letter saying the biopsies came back benign and negative. I am not sure what
that means (were the villi checked for celiac? I will ask)
Any ideas? Might she have refractory sprue? I asked the doctor if her
insides maybe can't heal totally because of her age. He thought they should heal
totally.
  Thanks!
