I do not know whether the  charging circuit would handle this.  I have
forgotten what the characteristic of the various batteries are and there
may be differences.  Also if a smart pack is used, this could be an
additional problem.  A work around might be a external power input but
this too likely would involve modification which might void any warrant
or guarantee .

I do however have a neat little trick I used on the bns for emergencies
which was a 9 volt battery clip coupled with the dc input plug for the
bns.  they we and are cheep at Radio shack.  

QST has had severl articles on variousl batteries and charging which
would make good background reading if you can find them at the arrl web
site.
