The one I remember was made by a small company which was later purchased by
AEA not long before they went under. It was the same company which made the
HamLink and RadioLink remote hf control boxes.
I am fortunate enough to own a HamLink which I used to control a TS440 by
phone while living in an apartment. Unfortunately, I let the only one of
that company's talking freq counters I ever saw get away before I could buy
it. Sure wish someone still made that little box. It would count up to uhf.
Some of you may also remember that the first external talking display for
Tentec rigs in the very late 70s was in reality a frequency counter.
If a CW readout will do for you, Small Wonder Labs sells the FreqMite. This
small circuit board can be configured to act as a stand-alone counter up to
about 60 MHZ.
It is sold as a kit for about $20, and you supply the box for it. It's small
enough tht it could easily be mounted in an Altoids tin, even with a tiny
speaker.
It took my broadcast technician about an hour to build it and mount it in a
box.
