I live about 25 miles from the closest repeater. There are other hams
in this area and they said if I had a 50 watt moble with a mfj ground
antenna I could hit anything within 50 miles. So I am looking for a
good mobile. Base stations are too expensive.

You see them occasionally, but since mobile rigs, and handy talkys,
are move carried and bounced around alot, I'd be careful about buying
used mobile type gear. If you know the ham, and his/her charictor,
that is different. For what you might save buying used, better to
wait and save over a bit of time. The other critical issue, is what
is the vhf/uhf activity like where you live?
What repeaters are active? How far are they from you? What will it
take to reach them? How hostile with intermod and loud out of band
signals is your location?
