Hi All--
For those of us who live in or around Huntsville/Madison, Alabama, Oh'Bryan's Family Steakhouse is one of the best in terms of service and wanting to "get it right" for celiacs....and actually getting it right.
A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to eat at the Oh'Bryan's in Madison (there's also one in Double Springs, AL). I called ahead and spoke with the manager. She indicated to me that yes, they had been given some training on gluten-free cooking, but they really didn't know much about the issues involved. When I arrived for dinner (on a Saturday night), I expected that the only thing I would be able to eat was a baked potato and steamed veggies. They had a salad bar, but it's too risky for me. I asked to see the manager I'd spoken with earlier and by the time I left, they had grilled me one of the best chicken breasts I'd ever had - no seasonings. Oh, yes, and Bryan grilled it for me!
The manager told me that they had had some calls from celiacs, but to her knowledge, no one with celiac disease had come in to eat. I gave them two different dining cards that listed the things we can't have. But the one thing that made this a stand-out restaurant was management's willingness to go the extra mile to learn and provide a gluten free meal. I don't enjoy being "glutin-ated" any more than anyone else, so eating out is always a risky thing. The chicken didn't have any seasonings, nor did the veggies, but I felt welcome, I felt the restaurant staff was trying as hard as they could, and got to spend time with my family. If I had accidently ingested gluten, I still would go back. We were all newbies at one time and poisoned ourselves more than once in the first year. If a restaurant is anxious to provide gluten-free meals properly, they go to the top of the list in my book.
So, for anyone passing through Madison or for the celiacs in this area, call ahead and go have a great meal!
