I went to Atkins years ago...btw he gave the best  basic exam ever!...one of the things he checked was acid production.  You had to swallow a small capsule which reported everything that was going on in your digestive system.  He said flat out that everyone over 35 should be taking digestive enzymes.  He said that production of stomach acids start decreasing at that time and needs to be supplemented.
