A big thanks to Sarah for this. I had forgotten some of the details I
learned so many years ago in school. [My comment below in brackets.] ~

Technically, there are 4 cardinal signs of inflammation. All 4 signs must
be present. They are
heat
pain
redness
swelling

(this is also called calor, dolor, rubor, and turgor)

-itis simply refers to inflammation.

The only reason I brought this up is that you mentioned several more signs
of inflammation, and also
indicated that only some of the signes needed to be present. I just thought
I would clarify what the term inflammation refers to, from a medical
perspective. btw "cheek-itis" is really called buccalitis (as in the
mumps). heheh -Sarah

[HEAT! AHA! I knew I'd forgotten something . . . it was heat. Itching &
fluid seepage sometimes accompany inflammation, but as Sarah says, are not
necessarily by definition signs of inflammation. And, Sarah, I still like
the term "cheek-itis" better for a reaction to a slap in the face! It's
just cheekier!]
