I just learned about the experimental "Google Trends" tool, which reports
on the number of searches and news items for specified words/phrases over
time, mapping out a graph showing trend histories on those terms for the
past 2+ years. So I used it to create a chart showing the relative trends
in searches for different diet types:

Summary:
1. South Beach, Atkins and Zone (in that order) are the only ones popular
enough to show peaks on this chart.
2. Paleo People are still flying below the radar.
3. Interest in the subject of diet overall seems to be waning since early 2004
(this was substantiated by running multiple searches comparing the word
"diet" to other common words)
4. (As might be expected), the subject of diet peaks annually, right around
new years day.
