I got lost of information, thanks to all who responded. I am trying to use
the archives. Which was suggested by several. I am posting a separate list
of restaurants because otherwise the post would be too long. We decided to
take a chance on a hotel near the event we are attending and hope the full
breakfast includes something I can eat.
The following are from list-serve members

1) We found a great B&B but not in the capitol area. They were quite
accommodating of the GF diet. It’s located only a few blocks from several
great restaurants and a Whole Foods for stocking up on your own. Hot water
first thing in the morning was a bit of a problem since we were on the top
floor. Some street noise, but our room faced the street. You could ask to
be on the 2nd floor and off the street. They also have a nice outdoor
seating area. Close to bus lines.

2) We stayed at the Hawthorn Suites in Alexandria last fall. Our
suite had a full kitchen, and they were very helpful about giving
us a brand new toaster and colander in our unit for GF cooking.
It is outside DC, but we just took the hotel shuttle (free) to
the Metro every day and avoided the huge expense and headache of
DC parking. There are several grocery stores in Alexandria with
GF food.
The hotel did offer a full breakfast, but I just got fruit or
juice from it and mainly prepared GF food in own kitchen.

3) We used to live in the Friendship Heights area of DC and there is a
great
Embassy Suites there. It is on Wisconsin Avenue across from the Mazza
Gallerie and directly on top of the Red Line Metro. This is definately not
the Capitol Area, but is a great choice from someone who wants very easy
access to the "touristy" stuff, but also wants a more authentic feel of
"life in DC." Lots of shops and restaurants (speak with the Managers at
Chadwick's, Clyde's, and Booeymonger for GF menu items). There is great GF
grocery shopping the area as well - Trader Joes, Rodman's, Whole Foods.
Have a great time in DC.
4) We stayed at the Embassy Suites on 22nd downtown. They have a
beautiful lobby with a full breakfast buffet in the morning. They even
had grits! You can get fruit, eggs, meats, etc. This is also a nice
place to stay because all the rooms are suites so if you are traveling
with more than one person, you have 2 TV's, a small bar area, and most
importantly, a living room area to spread out in.
We stayed at the Virginian Suites-it has a full kitchen, separate bedroom,
living/dining room. Right near Iwo Jima and a Metro stop, parking for
guests.
We had a wonderful trip to Washington DC in February. We stayed at the Day's
Inn which is located at 4400 Connecticut Ave. It was a very convenient
location...just a couple of blocks from the subway and right across the
street from a wonderful restaurant called Shangahi Garden. If you like
Chinese food, I strongly recommend this place. The owner/chef is very
knowledgable about celiac disease and prepared several gluten free meals for
us. It was quite a treat for my celiac husband who hasn't been able to eat
Chinese food since his diagnosis 10 years ago. (No gluten friendly Chinese
restaurants where we live!)
Contact info for the restaurant is:
Shanghai Garden

4469 Connecticut Ave NW
Washington, DC 20008
