In our area of the world there are still quite a number of circular sawmills
running. Many are owned and operated by Amish sawyers. Circular sawmill
blades need guide blocks to keep them from running out. Enos Hersberger used
to make white oak pegs for timber framing and osage orange pegs for sawmill
guide blocks. Not only could they handle the heat, they were self
lubricating, as the wood is oily, and could run for thousand of board feet
of milling without wearing out because the wood is so tough.
I wonder who the sawyers get there guide blocks from now since Enos took his
last buggy ride to be with his Lord?
