CANOPY CENTER, INC.
FAMILIES UNITED NETWORK PROGRAM
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
LATINO-FAMILIES SUPPORT SPECIALIST (10 OR 20 HRS PER WEEK)

AGENCY MISSION AND PROGRAM SUMMARY:  The mission of the Canopy Center is to prevent child abuse and neglect, strengthen families, and promote healing of those affected by abuse through the provision of culturally competent and diverse professional, volunteer and peer services.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Families United Network provides parent support groups to parents who are feeling stress because they are parenting special needs children, are living in or just above poverty level, and/or are trying to parent differently than they were parented.  While parents are in their groups, children under age 6 are in childcare, children ages 6-12 are in children's groups and children over 12 are in teen groups.  The children/teen groups are fun, activity based groups that work to provide a safe, supportive space for children to talk about their lives and find ways to deal with problems.  This program follows a national model called Circle of Parents(tm).

POSITION SUMMARY: The Latino-Families Support Specialist for the Families United Network Program of the Canopy Center is responsible for providing training and assistance to all volunteers/staff working with Latino families, overseeing groups containing individuals who are primarily Spanish-speaking, recruiting Spanish-speaking volunteers to adequately serve the Latino families and providing support to these families outside of group as appropriate.  PLEASE NOTE THIS POSITION IS BEING POSTED FOR 10 OR 20 HOURS PER WEEK.  If working 20-hours per week, this position will also facilitate a parent support group (currently an English-speaking group) on one additional evening each week.

QUALIFICATIONS:  The Latino-Families Support Specialist position requires a person fluent in Spanish and English with knowledge and experience in Latino cultures.  The Latino-Families Support Specialist must have 2-5 years of experience working with children and families in a social service setting, with a Bachelor or Associate degree in the human service field preferred.  The Latino-Families Support Specialist must be able to multi-task to oversee the needs of the entire Latino population being served by this program, work as a member of a team to aid in program planning and implementation and translate needed materials when necessary.

DUTIES:   The Latino-Families Support Specialist is responsible for scheduling and conducting orientation meetings with all potential Latino families, advocating for program participants and referring to other services as needed, attending home visits as appropriate, debriefing with program staff and volunteers following evening groups, help oversee all group services provided to Latino families to ensure needs are being met, facilitating groups for parents (1 groups if working 10 hrs per week or 2 groups if working 20 hrs per week), locating or translating appropriate parenting materials in Spanish, and acting as liaison between staff and Latino participants.  The Latino-Families Support Specialist is also responsible for participating as a member of the Families United Network team to plan and implement the program and providing data needed for accountability.
